The vedic Astrology , considered as the part of Divine Vedas of Hinduism,advised by Lord Brahma the creator himself to his disciple sons is an important tool in the hands of divine souls to guide and direct the people of planet earth for making their life more comfortable and meaningful.
Vedic astrology besides recognizing the planets, the houses and its strength, also stresses on the importance of the operating periods of the seven planets and two shadowy planets namely Rahu and Kethu.( Dragon's head and tail)The strength of a horoscope is therefore determined not only by the placements of the planets or the lords of various houses but also by the operating periods of various planets both benifics and malefics. Yet another factor that the vedic astrology alone recognizes , and has explored in the realm of astrology is the Yogas or combinations. Yogas can be simply defined as the effect of combinations of planets, and/or their strength both in terms of placement and in terms of the distance from the ascendant or Moon . Normally a yoga results from the conjunction of planets , being lords of unique houses like angle or trine ,and also by the placement of the planets in own or exaltation houses that happens to be angle or trine of the ascendant.A combination can also be formed on the other hand ,by the sheer powerlessness of a planet that happens to be a malefic lord or owner of a malefic house like 6th 8th or 12th.
The pancha Maha Purusha Yogas are the five important major Yogas in a horoscope. The purusha word is attached here presumably due to the fact that, in olden days it was men who earned and lead the family. In the present day scenario these combinations can also be fruitfully applied in female horoscopy.
The five important combinations are formed by the strength of the Five major planets excluding the Sun and the Moon (besides Rahu and Kethu) and thus involve Mars,Mercury,Jupiter,Venus and Saturn. the placement of these planets in an angle to the ascendant or Moon coupled with their placement in own or exaltation houses give rise to five different combinations of Importance.
